If your calendar for the month starts and ends with Caramoor, you are treating August like July. It isn't. The month has a handoff built into it, and the handoff happens on a specific Sunday afternoon in Katonah. Read the season correctly and the four weeks after Labor Day weekend become the most flexible stretch of the summer in 10506.
The thesis is simple. Bedford's August is not one calendar winding down. It is two calendars trading places, with Caramoor closing on August 2 and the Bedford Playhouse quietly stepping into the anchor slot for the rest of the month. Once you see the pivot, the food row, the shuttle logistics, and the film calendar all line up behind it.
The First 48 Hours Set The Terms
Caramoor's 81st summer season runs on the estate's 81 acres of historic gardens and woodlands in Katonah, and this year it runs from Saturday, June 20 through Saturday, August 2. Two performances close it, back to back.
Saturday, August 1 brings Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, a three-time Grammy winner known for hits like The Way It Is and collaborations with the Grateful Dead. Sunday, August 2 at 4:00 p.m. is the finale in the Venetian Theater: the Orchestra of St. Luke's conducted by Xian Zhang, featuring violin soloist Gil Shaham, in Shaham's first return to Caramoor since 2016, performing Barber's Violin Concerto framed by Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri Overture and Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony.
Those are the last two dates the estate is programmed until autumn. If your household has been rotating between the Venetian Theater, the Spanish Courtyard, and Friends Field on weekends, the rotation ends there. Which is the point of paying attention to what fills the space next.
The Handoff You Can Plan Around
The Bedford Playhouse, at 633 Old Post Rd in Bedford, is the second stage. It has been for a while, but August is the month it stops being a supplement and becomes the anchor. The date to circle is Saturday, August 10.
That is when the 5th Annual Katonah Classic Stage Film Festival takes place in the Main Theater, presenting an evening showcase of short films from all over the world, with entries including an Academy-Award nominee and a local cinematographer. This is a Bedford event without a Caramoor-scale marketing budget behind it. That is the reason to know about it, not the reason to skip it.
Around that anchor, the Playhouse runs a set of parallel formats worth stacking into a single week:
- Summer Series on the lawn. A series of performances presented outdoors on the Playhouse Lawn. Bring a picnic and some lawn chairs and enjoy high quality entertainment along with the fresh air. This is the closest Bedford gets to a Caramoor-style picnic evening after August 2.
- Broadway in Bedford. The live-events roster includes Broadway in Bedford: One Night in Oz, starring Amanda Jane Cooper of Wicked, Marie Eife of the Wicked national tour and the most recent Australian company, and Jason Gotay of Broadway's Floyd Collins, Spider-Man, and Bring It On, accompanied on piano by Dan Micciche, music director and conductor of Wicked.
- Trivia Night at the Cafe. Trivia Night returns to the Bedford Playhouse Cafe, hosted by Rachel from Rock Paper Scissors Custom Events. Play solo or as a team and test your knowledge on a wide range of topics, including movies, music, history, geography and more. Food and drink available for sale from the bar.
Three formats, one venue, one walkable block. If you were relying on Caramoor to structure the weekends, this is the swap.
The Food Row Does More Work In August
The restaurants are the connective tissue. In July they are where you go before a concert. In August they are the evening itself.
The list a resident actually rotates through, not the tourist top ten:
- oHHo at The Old Fire House, Bedford Village. A backdrop for pizza, coffee, and other beverages sold at the bar, with useful sundry available and comfortable seating and dining tables scattered about the space. The quick espresso stop that also holds a table for two hours.
- Bedford Post Tavern. The dining room at Bedford Post, with Chef Sam Mason cooking classics and the Relais & Châteaux operation running breakfast, lunch, and brunch service. This is the reservation you make when out-of-town guests are visiting the second week of August, not the fourth.
- Bedford 234. Kitchen hours currently running Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the bar staying open at least an hour past the kitchen. A weeknight default.
- Ginger Japanese Restaurant. A family business that has been a Bedford favorite since 2004. The husband-and-wife team of Meiling Khoo and Edward Hsu decided to retire this past December. The transition is the news. Sandy Zou has worked at Ginger for the past nine years, and when Meiling and Edward were looking to retire, she decided she would take over ownership of the restaurant with her husband, Jia Zheng Lu. Same room, same staff continuity, new ownership. Worth a visit in August specifically to check in on how the menu is being handled.
None of these require a drive to Mount Kisco or Katonah village. All of them sit inside the Bedford orbit that August residents can build a week around.
The Detail That Changes The Math
Here is the piece most residents overlook, and it matters both weekends of the closing. Caramoor runs a free Metro-North shuttle from Katonah train station to and from Caramoor before and after every afternoon and evening concert during the summer season.
Interpreted locally: on August 1 and August 2 you do not need to park on the estate. Drive to the Katonah station lot, take the shuttle, and you have a driver on the way back. The same logic applies for guests coming up from Grand Central who do not want a car in the picture at all. This is not a marketed feature of the closing weekend. It is buried in the season's logistics page. Knowing it is the difference between a two-drink evening and a one-drink evening.
The shuttle also frames why the food row matters after August 2. Once the Katonah-side shuttle stops running, evening plans concentrate on the walkable stretch around the Playhouse and Bedford Village. The center of gravity shifts west by about three miles for the rest of the month.
How To Actually Use The Month
A working August, read through this pivot, looks less like a calendar and more like a set of overlaps.
The first weekend belongs to Caramoor, and the smart play is the shuttle rather than the parking field. The second weekend belongs to the Playhouse, with the Katonah Classic Stage Film Festival on the 10th as the fixed point and the lawn series and cafe programming on the shoulder nights. The last two weeks are a quieter stretch that the food row is built to absorb, with Ginger's ownership transition worth checking in on and Bedford Post Tavern holding down the higher-touch reservation.
None of this requires leaving 10506, 10507, or 10536. That is the argument for reading the season correctly. August in Bedford rewards residents who understand that the marquee closing weekend is also the handoff, and who have the second calendar loaded before the first one ends.
